Where to see black-maned Kalahari lions

The lions of the Kalahari are famous for their dark, flowing manes and for surviving in one of the driest places a lion can live. Seen against red dunes and silver grass, they are one of southern Africa's most photographed animals.

Quick answer

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, shared by South Africa and Botswana, is the best place to see black-maned Kalahari lions, especially along the dry Nossob and Auob riverbeds. Private reserves in the southern Kalahari are another good option. March to May, after the rains, is a sweet spot, but lions are seen all year.

  • Be at the waterholes at first light; lions often drink early.

Questions travellers ask

Why do Kalahari lions have black manes?

Dark manes are linked to age, health and testosterone, and are common in cooler, drier areas. In the Kalahari, a dark mane signals a strong male.

Are Kalahari lions a different species?

No. They are the same species as other African lions, adapted to desert life.

Can I self-drive the Kgalagadi?

Yes, but the Botswana side needs a 4x4. A guided stay at a small camp adds expert tracking.
