Where to see black rhino in Africa

The black rhino is critically endangered and far shyer than its white cousin. Namibia is home to the largest free-roaming population of the desert-adapted subspecies, and tracking one on foot with expert guides is unforgettable. To protect them, we only ever describe broad regions, never specific locations.

Quick answer

Namibia gives the best chances to see black rhino, both on guided rhino-tracking walks in Damaraland and at waterholes in and around Etosha. Protected private reserves in South Africa and Zimbabwe are other options. Go in the dry season, May to October, when rhinos come to water.

Tips from the field

  • Choose a camp that offers rhino tracking with trained community guides.
  • Sit up at a floodlit waterhole after dark, a classic way to see black rhino.
  • Never share rhino locations or geotag photos. Poachers watch social media too.

Questions travellers ask

What is the difference between black and white rhino?

They are both grey. The black rhino is smaller, with a hooked upper lip for browsing bushes; the white rhino is larger, with a wide, square lip for grazing.

Why don't you name exact rhino locations?

Rhino are heavily poached. Like responsible guides and camps, we only describe broad regions to help keep them safe.

Is rhino tracking on foot safe?

With trained professional guides and trackers, who keep a careful distance and read the wind, it is well managed and done regularly.
