Where to see great white sharks in South Africa
For decades the Cape coast was the world's great white shark capital. Since around 2017, orcas hunting sharks along the coast have changed that, and sightings are now far less predictable. Seeing one is still possible, and the best operators are honest about the odds.
Quick answer
The Cape coast is still the place to try for great white sharks in South Africa, with cage-diving and viewing trips from Gansbaai and Mossel Bay. Since orcas began hunting along the coast around 2017, great whites have become much less reliable, and bronze whaler sharks now make up many sightings. The best chances are in the cooler months, roughly April to October.

Tips from the field
- Choose a research-led operator that reports honestly on recent sightings.
- Book early in your stay so you have spare days if the sea is too rough.
- Combine with southern right whales from June to November, African penguins and fynbos birds such as the Cape sugarbird.
Questions travellers ask
Can you still see great white sharks in South Africa?
Yes, but less reliably than before 2017, when orcas began hunting sharks along the Cape coast. Many trips now see bronze whalers instead.
Is shark cage diving safe?
With established, licensed operators it is closely regulated and has a long safety record.
Do I need to be a diver?
No. Cage diving is done at the surface with a mask, and non-swimmers can watch from the boat.
