Where to see African wild dogs
African wild dogs, also known as painted wolves, are among the continent's most endangered carnivores, with only a few thousand left in the wild. Watching a pack set off on a hunt is one of the great safari moments.
Quick answer
Northern Botswana, including the Okavango Delta and Moremi, is the stronghold for African wild dogs. Hwange and Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, South Luangwa in Zambia and South Africa's Greater Kruger are also good. The best time is the denning season, roughly June to September, when packs stay close to their pups.

When to go
| Months | Chances | Why |
|---|---|---|
| June to September | Best | Denning season: packs return to the same den daily, so they are easier to find. |
| October to May | Possible | Packs roam huge areas, so sightings become less predictable. |
Tips from the field
- Time your trip for the denning season if wild dogs are top of your list.
- Ask camps about recent pack movements before you book; they cover vast ranges.
- Combine two areas to improve your odds.
Questions travellers ask
Why are African wild dogs endangered?
Mainly habitat loss, conflict with people and livestock, and diseases caught from domestic dogs. They need very large areas to survive.
Are African wild dogs and painted wolves the same?

Can you see wild dogs on a walking safari?
Yes, particularly in Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, always with an experienced professional guide.
