Where to see brown hyena in Africa

Shaggy, secretive and mostly nocturnal, the brown hyena is one of southern Africa's most sought-after sightings. It lives only in the drier west and south of the region, so many classic safari areas will never show you one.

Quick answer

The Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana and the Kalahari, including the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, give the best chances, especially from April to October. Madikwe in South Africa and Namibia's Namib coast are good alternatives. Plan three nights or more and choose camps with night drives.

The best places to look

Botswana

Makgadikgadi Pans

Vast salt pans and grasslands, with night drives and research-led sightings. Pairs well with habituated meerkats and, in the rains, the zebra migration.

Botswana and South Africa

Kalahari and the Kgalagadi

Red dunes and dry riverbeds where brown hyena share the stage with black-maned lion and cheetah.

South Africa

Madikwe

A malaria-free Big Five reserve within reach of Johannesburg, good for families, with wild dog as a bonus.

Namibia

The Namib coast

Brown hyenas forage along the shoreline here, including around seal colonies. A wild and dramatic setting.

Tips from the field

  • Choose camps that offer night drives or walks with researchers.
  • Stay at least three nights. Brown hyenas are seen far more often over several evenings.
  • Combine with other dry-country specialists, such as meerkat, aardvark and black-maned lion.

Questions travellers ask

Is brown hyena hard to see?

Yes. It is shy and mostly active at night, so a sighting usually needs a night drive in the right habitat and a few evenings of trying.

Can you see brown hyena in Kruger?

Very rarely. Kruger is outside its main range. The drier west of southern Africa gives far better chances.

What is the difference between brown and spotted hyena?

Brown hyenas are smaller, with long shaggy coats and pointed ears, and live in drier country. Spotted hyenas are larger, live in bigger clans and are common across most safari areas.
